Soon after the launch of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus on Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage to say there is “one more thing” remaining to be announced. What followed next was the unveiling of the premium iPhone X (pronounced as tenth) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of iPhones.
Design and Display
The iPhone X sports a marvelous bezel-less design that boasts a very high screen-to-body ratio. At the topside of the display is an u-shaped notch that houses various kinds of sensors such as ambient sensor, selfie camera, face recognition sensor and more. The iPhone X’s chassis feature surgical-grade stainless steel frame between the front and rear glass panels. Like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the iPhone X too features the strongest glass ever in a smartphone. The IP67 rated iPhone X is protected from damage from dust and water contact.
The iPhone X fulfills Apple’s vision of launching an all-display smartphone. The iPhone X houses a larger 5.8-inch display compared to the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus. However, the iPhone X that measures 143.6 x 70.9 mm is smaller and narrower than the iPhone 8 Plus. The thickness of iPhone X is 7.7 mm and its weight is 174 grams. Silver and Space Gray are two color choices available for iPhone X buyers. Since the iPhone X houses a full screen design, Apple has axed the Touch ID embedded home button. Instead, the iPhone X features a robust Face ID feature.
The edge-to-edge display of the iPhone X is called Super Retina Display by Apple which is an enhanced version of Retina Display seen on other iPhones. The iPhone X is the first smartphone from the company to house a 5.8-inch OLED panel that supports wider color gamut, HDR 10 and Dolby Vision for amazing cinematic experience. The screen produces a resolution of 1,125 x 2,436 pixels along with a pixel count of 458 ppi. Other features include 3D Touch and True Tone technology that adapts the screen’s colors with the ambient lighting.
Performance and Face ID
Like the iPhone 8 duo, the iPhone X is also powered by Apple A11 Bionic SoC. Apple claims that it is its most powerful chipset and this has become all the more evident through its Geekbench scores that had surfaced few hours before the launch of 2017 iPhones. The exact size of the iPhone X’s battery is not known. However, along with the iPhone 8 duo, it becomes the first smartphones from the company to support for Qi wireless charging and fast charging.
Face ID relies on the various sensors such as flood illuminator, infrared camera, dot projector and more that are present above the display to unlock the iPhone X by accurately scanning the face of the user. Apple claims that even in darker conditions, the Face ID will function accurately. It can be also used to safely authenticate transactions through Apple Pay. It is so accurate that it cannot be spoofed by photos or masks.
Cameras and Augmented Reality
The f/2.2 aperture 7-megapixel TrueDepth selfie snapper is equipped with features like Retina flash, portrait mode and auto image stabilization. Portrait Lighting feature provides five presets for beautifying the face with studio lighting effects.
The dual rear camera setup of iPhone X features a 12-megapixel f/1.8 aperture wide-angle sensor and a 12-megapixel f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens with optical zoom. The features that accompany the dual cameras include dual OIS, quad-LED, 6x digital zoom, 4K video shooting, 1080p slow-mo videos at 120 fps or 240 fps, still photo shooting while 4K video recording and Portrait Lighting. The support for HVEC and HEIF on iOS 11 compresses the photos and videos by twofold.
The dual cameras that are equipped with sensors for accelerometer and gyroscope bring augmented reality features like world mapping, scene recognition and more. The TrueDepth camera enables the iOS 11 enabled iPhone X to support new kind of emoji called Animoji (animated emojis) that enables various cartoon characters to match the facial expression and speech of the user. Animoji messages can be sent to recipients as looping videos with audios through iMessage.
The iPhone X runs on redesigned iOS 11 that replaces the functionality of the physical home button with gestures. Swiping up from the bottom takes the user to home screen. Swiping up from the bottom and holding it briefly to view recently access apps.
Pricing and Availability
In the U.S., the Apple iPhone X’s 64 GB and 256 GB storage models are priced at $999 and $1,149. India will be receiving both the storage variants of the iPhone X with respective pricing of Rs 89,000 and a whopping Rs. 102,000.
Along with the U.S., India will be one of the first countries to receive the iPhone X. The smartphone will be up for pre-orders from 27th October in these countries and it will be hitting the market on 3rd November.
